4 common challenges that keep nonprofit leaders from a balanced life

Nonprofit leadership is rewarding, but let’s face it—it’s also overwhelming.
You’re often admired for your willingness to “do whatever it takes.” But here’s the truth: while that mindset might seem heroic, it’s actually harmful—to you, your team, and your organization.

endless to do list

1. the endless to-do list

You’re juggling everything—fundraising, staff, and outreach. But trying to do it all just makes the list grow longer. This workshop will help you stop over-committing and start prioritizing.

No time for yourself

2. no time for yourself

Your own needs always come last when you’re in “whatever it takes” mode. This workshop will help you find balance and make space for yourself, without sacrificing your mission.

Always on but still behind

3. always “on” but still behind

You’re constantly working, but it feels like you’re never caught up. This workshop will teach you how to do less, but do it strategically, so you can get ahead.

Everything is urgent

4. everything feels urgent

When you’re trying to do everything for everyone, it’s hard to tell what’s truly important. In this workshop, you’ll learn how to focus on the work that makes the biggest impact.

AND Why do so many nonprofit leaders struggle to prioritize their time?

1. Too Many Hats.

When you feel like you have to “do it all,” you end up wearing too many hats. Your attention is pulled in too many directions, making it hard to focus on your highest priorities.

2. No Clear Roadmap.

Without a plan to manage your time, you end up reacting to everyone’s needs and doing everything. This workshop will help you shift from reactive to proactive, so you can lead more effectively.

3. Fear of Letting People Down.

Nonprofit leaders often feel that saying no means letting people down. But trying to do everything spreads you too thin and harms your mission. This workshop will help you learn how to say no—strategically.

4. The Harm of “Doing Whatever It Takes.”

While it’s admirable to be willing to do whatever it takes, this mentality leads to burnout and decreased effectiveness. This workshop will teach you how to focus on what truly matters, so you can lead with more impact and protect your energy.

Our work is more than “just a job”

As someone who discovered real meaning and purpose in my work the day I began a career as a nonprofit leader, I understand (as I think most of you do) that work to make the world fairer, more just, and more beautiful gives me life!

This workshop will be a light lift (I know how busy you are), incredibly powerful, and perfectly timed given everything going on in the world right now.

Time to take back control

it’s time to take back control

You don’t have to live in a constant state of overwhelm. Joan Garry has helped countless nonprofit leaders, just like you, learn how to prioritize their time, focus on what matters most, and stop believing that doing everything is the only way to make an impact.

Join this LIGHT-LIFT workshop and learn how to reclaim your time, create healthy boundaries, and focus on the work that makes the biggest difference—without burning yourself out in the process.

You are a superhero!

Hi there 👋
We’re the
Nonprofit Leadership Lab!

Since 2017, we’ve helped over 20,000 organizations thrive.

As the world’s best online program for board and staff leaders of smaller nonprofits who want to raise more money, build a 5-star board, attract more supporters, grow as leaders and managers, and live more balanced lives, we’ve had the privilege of helping thousands of nonprofit professionals across more than 100 different sectors.

Through our work, we’ve identified the best strategies for managing time, prioritizing high-impact work, and avoiding burnout. The result? Leaders feel in control of their time, focused on what truly matters, and energized to lead.

By helping leaders take back control of their time, we’ve seen nonprofits thrive — driving more impact and empowering teams to stay focused without sacrificing personal well-being.

“Doing whatever it takes is NOT sustainable.”

Led by nonprofit expert Joan Garry, this workshop will teach you the same proven strategies she uses with her 1:1 clients to regain control of your time, focus on what matters, and avoid burnout. Joan has helped thousands of leaders do the same, and now she’s ready to guide you.

Every workshop I ever attended is of the highest quality and I have gained so much from each. Your presenters are knowledgeable and so very articulate – I’m impressed and inspired by their expertise and ease of discussing these issues! Thank you!

Gosia Bagley

Executive Director, Chicago Center for Music Education (ChiME)

One of the things that can’t really be adequately conveyed in a workshop description is how it feels like you are being wrapped up in a community of support. Even though we’re all virtual, I left every day feeling like I had 100+ people who were cheering me on. Also, the NLL team is stellar!
Jen Boschee-Danzer

Executive Director, NAMI Yolo County CA

I love NLL workshops. Not only do I learn a lot, I have more fun at them than game night with friends. They are always interesting, creative, and dynamic. I look forward to each month’s topic.

Lissa Clayborn

Program Coordinator, United Way of Bradford County

It’s fun to be in the same virtual room with so many other nonprofit heros! There is such an encouraging and collaborative feel to the workshop — much better live than recorded!

This workshop is ideal for nonprofit leaders, executive directors, and senior staff who feel overwhelmed by their workload and want to reclaim control of their time. It’s perfect for those who are juggling too many priorities, struggling to stay focused on high-impact work, and finding it difficult to create balance in their personal and professional lives. If you’re ready to lead with more clarity, energy, and purpose—without burning out—this workshop is for you.
What if I can’t attend the live sessions?

No problem! If you purchase the Workshop-Only option, you will have access to all the workshop recordings for at least one year after the workshop is complete. This allows you to learn at your own pace and revisit the material whenever you need.

And, if you join the Lab as a full member, the recordings will be available to you for as long as you remain a member.

What are the benefits of joining the Nonprofit Leadership Lab?

By joining the Lab, you gain access to:

  • Monthly workshops (just like this one) on essential topics like grant writing, fundraising strategies, website development, board governance, and volunteer management.

How does the free access to the workshop work for Lab members?

Membership is currently $49 per month or $490 per year, and you can cancel anytime with no further payments. This provides ongoing access to all the resources and support the Lab offers, including unlimited access to workshop recordings.

Can I really cancel my membership at any time?

Yes, you can cancel your membership at any time without any penalty. We believe in providing value, and we want you to stay because you’re benefiting from our resources, not because you’re locked into a contract.

Monthly members pay for the Lab just one month at a time and can cancel any time you want. If you sign up for an annual plan, you can cancel any time during the year with no further payments (you’ll remain a member for the year you already paid for).

Once you cancel your account you will retain access to the Lab until your current monthly or annual subscription period ends. You can, of course, rejoin during any future open registration period at whatever the current price is at that time.
